The guards were made of some sort of leather and has some mild soft padding inside with good quality welcrows… The outer shell has some steel like shell which will take away minor to moderate blows to ur knees, legs and elbows…. Serves the purpose for the cost… Joint movements will be limited to some degree and may sometimes slips down while walking with them… So have to readjust every while if u walks with them… I used them.for.my ladakh trip and did the purpose… And just remember that no guards can help u if u overspeed or do some awkard things while driving…. Drive safe always …

The shiny metal is individual preference. The straps have a bit of elasticity to cater for different leg size. However, sometimes a strap comes loose after a long drive, compromising safety.
